Join us for a panel exploring stereotypes and reclaiming the AAPI American narrative through art, music, film, and fashion. Followed by a DJ set + party.
Asians and Pacific Islanders have lived in the US for close to two centuries, yet few can describe Asian/Pacific Islander American culture. Considered Asian to non-AAPI Americans and American to the people of their motherlands, these individuals are distinctly Asian/Pacific Islander American.
"Since most AAPIs are still first or second generation, a lot of us learned what it is to be American through entertainment. We copied what we saw in Hollywood, heard in music, read about in books and magazines, but since we had little to no representation, what we were really doing was taking from other American cultures. And on the rare occasions that we were represented in entertainment, we were usually typecasted and only shown through stereotypes."
As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, join us as we hear from artists and thinkers reclaiming and redefining AAPI culture and identity.
